The COVAX Facility, a global partnership designed to achieve vaccine equity, has faced extreme supply constraints in the first half of 2021. The longer the virus continues to spread unchecked, the higher the risk of more deadly or contagious variants emerging. Most of these pledges haven’t been fulfilled. This inequity is unjust and puts us all at risk. While we need even more vaccines to meet demand, there are enough doses available among well-supplied countries to reach the world’s most vulnerable people right now. That can be achieved at the same time as boosting high-priority groups in better supplied nations.Īt the G7 summit in June 2021, well-supplied countries pledged to donate 1 billion vaccines. In some low-income countries, less than 5 per cent of people have received their shots. ![]() But profound inequities in vaccine access remain. About half of the global population had received the primary vaccination series. ![]() ![]() By the end of 2021, more than 9 billion vaccine doses had been administered worldwide.
